17,378,581 people voted to keep Britain in the EEC in 1975.

The total electorate was 40,086,677.

In percentage terms that represented 43.35% of the total electorate - not a majority....

Therefore, if only an absolute majority of the total eligible voters could be taken as a valid result (the remainer stance), the original vote to stay in the EEC in 1975 was invalid, and we would have left then, according to that rationale
